THE PANDEMIC: A BRIEF BACKGROUND

The 2019 Novel Coronavirus, most commonly known now as COVID-19, is a new kind of coronavirus that affects humans. It received a lot of attention because humans have never encountered this specific kind of virus before. The theory is that this kind of coronavirus came from an animal species, jumped into the human population, then begun spreading. COVID-19 started in Wuhan, China and its first recorded case was traced back in late of last year.
Its symptoms include cough, fever or chills, shortness of breath or difficult breathing, muscle or body aches, sore throat, new loss of taste or smell, diarrhea, headache, new fatigue, nausea or vomiting, and congestion or runny nose. In some cases, it may lead to respiratory problems, kidney failure, or death. If the following symptoms are observed for a long period of time, consult a doctor immediately. The virus can be transmitted through droplets.
As of today, the Philippines have currently 424,000 cases of COVID-19, 387,000 of which recovered. The total number of deaths is now more than 8000. Globally, a total of 6.6 million cases has been recorded, 38.9 million recovered, and 1.43 million did not.
Vaccines are now under their third- and final-phase clinical test and they are expected to arrive in bulk next year. 35 million Filipinos are expected to be vaccinated when the first doses of COVID-19 becomes available. The target is to vaccinate 60 million Filipinos and is expected to be reached three to five years upon receiving the vaccines.

Wearing of mask and face shields is currently required when entering an establishment. Frequent handwashing and using of alcohol is highly encouraged as well. Social distancing is observed. The Philippines is under new normal.
COVID-19 & ANTHROPOLOGY
Due to COVID-19 pandemic, borders have closed that caused to be a trade barrier. Lockdown was imposed, small-time businesses was forced to close and declare bankruptcy. This led to people losing their jobs. Unemployment rate surged up during the height of the pandemic and since the lockdown was imposed.

On the brighter side, e-commerce reached a lot of audience and paved its way into a new buying and selling system. Since close contact interactions are prohibited, a lot of people turned into online transactions. E-commerce mobile applications in the Philippines includes Shopee, Lazada, and Carousell. In line with this, online transactions have been introduced. Online banking, Cash on Delivery and Gcash are the mode of payments used nowadays.
COVID – 19 & SOCIOLOGY
As we entered the new normal, we also entered a new way of interacting. The pandemic made us a feet away from each other as “social distancing” was imposed.

Online classes was launched in order to prevent face-to face classes. In order to limit the transmission of COVID-19 especially in a classroom setting, the Department of Education launched three types of learning: online distance learning, modular learning, and TV/radio-based instruction learning.
COVID-19 & POLITICAL SCIENCE

The pandemic made us, the citizens, see what does our policymaker does for the betterment of the country. Reform interventions should be implemented. As a citizen, we rely on the government and it is the government’s responsibility to take care of its citizens and the socio-economic state of the country.
The future of the Filipinos is in the hands of the government. The government must be accountable for its actions at all times.
A YOUTH’S TAKE ON THE ONGOING PANDEMIC

Just like any teenager, I also find this situation we are facing in difficult, sometimes I lose hope. If ever you feel the same way, take a rest and breathe. Vent your rants and talk to someone. You are not alone.
Our surroundings changed. Entering the new normal may be a challenge but as a citizen, I try to follow and abide the rules implemented. I understand what we are currently experiencing and know what to do in order to prevent further transmission of this disease.
On a different note, pandemic gave me a lot of time to think and educate myself. I used this time wisely. I advocate for social issues online and try my best to speak up, my voice, should be heard.
As a Filipino youth, I realized that we can contribute to our society more by simply following the health protocols imposed, educating family and friends, and donating extra. Do online volunteering works. Advocate, educate, and be self-aware.
